Calamus-Wheatland CSD to Host Community Meeting on Bond Referendum

District residents invited to ask questions and provide feedback

WHEATLAND, IOWA — Residents of the Calamus-Wheatland Community School District are encouraged to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, October 22, at 5:30 p.m at the high school in Wheatland.

The meeting will provide community members with an opportunity to learn more about the $7.5 million bond referendum, which will appear on the November 5 ballot.

“We encourage all community members to attend this meeting to ask questions and share their thoughts,” said Superintendent Shane Knoche. “The bond referendum is an important decision for the future of our schools, and we value community feedback.”

At the high school campus in Wheatland, identified needs include a lack of a secure entrance, an outdated Agriculture Building with aging equipment not connected to the main school, poor circulation throughout the building, and crowded hallways and stairwells.

At the elementary school in Calamus, facility needs include mechanical system and equipment upgrades for the kitchen, and the renovation of the outdated commons area.

Since 2013, Calamus-Wheatland CSD’s cumulative tax levy rate has decreased by more than 15%. If approved by at least 60% of voters, the  bond referendum would result in a tax impact of $2.70 per year on every $1,000 of taxable property value (not assessed value).

For a home valued at $150,000, this equates to an estimated $14.55 per month, or $174.59 annually. The annual tax impact for agricultural property in Clinton County would be $3.87 per acre based on the average assessed value of $1,996 per acre, while in Scott County, the impact would be $4.30 per acre based on an average assessed value of $2,222.
